Alligator Subtraction
Title: Alligator Subtraction
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: 1
Overview:
First grade students will take a virtual tour of Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Students will then use alligator cutouts to show subtraction stories with a minuend of 5. They will then illustrate an equation with a minuend of 5 using KidPix.
Approximate Duration: 1 sixty minute class period
Content Standards:
Number and Number Relations
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of the real number system and communicate the relationships within that system using a variety of techniques and tools.
Algebra
In problem-solving investigations students demonstrate an understanding of concepts and processes that allow them to analyze, represent, and describe relationships among variable quantities and to apply algebraic methods to real-world situations.
Benchmarks:
N-4-E
demonstrating a conceptual understanding of the meaning of the basic arithmetic operations (add, subtract, multiply, and divide) and their relationships to each other;
A-1-E
demonstrating a conceptual understanding of variables, expressions, equations, and inequalities (e.g., use letters or boxes to represent values; understand =, , <, and > symbols);
A-3-E
recognizing the connection of algebra to the other strands and to real-life situations (e.g., number sentences or formulas to represent real-world problems).
Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs):
Algebra
Grade 1
17. Use the equal sign (=) to express the relationship of equality (A-1-E) 18. Use objects, pictures, and number sentences to represent real-life problem situations involving addition and subtraction (N-7-E) (A-1-E) (A-3-E)
Educational Technology Standards:
Use a variety of developmentally appropriate resources and productivity tools (e.g., logical thinking programs, writing and graphic tools, digital cameras, graphing software) for communication, presentation, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories.
Objectives:
TLW color water and land on a simple map.
TLW count forward and backward from zero to ten.
TLW use the equal sign to express the relationship of equality.
TLW use alligator cutouts to act out subtraction stories with a minuend of 5.
TLW illustrate a subtraction equation with a minuend of 5 using KidPix software.
Lesson Materials and Resources:
Numerals 0 to 10 written on alligator die cuts
Pocket chart
One sheet of white paper for each child

abcteach Printable Worksheet: Subtraction Practice 0-4
http://www.abcteach.com/Math/sub1.htmBackground Information:
Students should have had prior experiences identifying land and water on maps, acting out subtraction stories, illustrating subtraction stories on paper, and writing subtraction equations for stories. Most of the students will not have had experience using KidPix software.
Lesson Procedures:
Introduction: Sequence numerals 0-10 on alligator die cuts in a pocket chart. Sing "Ten Little Alligators in the Bayou" to the tune of "Ten Little Indians." Review what happens to value of the numbers when counting in forward and reverse order.1.Students will take a virtual tour of Black Bayou Lake. The students will view a picture of an alligator http://www.mcschools.net/mcs/black_bayou_files/the_pier.html and discuss where this alligator lives. The students will listen to some of the sounds of Black Bayou Lake. http://www.mcschools.net/mcs/black_bayou_files/resources_for_blackbayou_project.html
2. Give each student a sheet of white paper. Model drawing Black Bayou Lake on the paper. Monitor as students draw their own lake. Ask: "What colors are used to represent land and water on a map?" Accept responses. Monitor as students color the land green and the lake blue.
3. Give each student five alligator cutouts. Explain that they will be using the cutouts to act out subtraction stories.
4. Beginning with five alligators each time, tell subtraction stories for students to act out using their alligator cutouts (ex. There were five alligators in the lake. Two went onto the bank. How many remained in the water?). Record each story as an equation on chart paper as it is acted out. Review how the numerals and signs correspond to the action of each story.
5. Write subtraction equations on the board.
5-3=___ 5-4=___
5-1=___ 5-0=___
5-5=___ 5-2=___
Tell a subtraction story about the alligators for students to show using their cutouts. Ask a student to find and complete the equation representing each story after it is acted out. When all equations are completed, the teacher may want to discuss related subtraction equations.
6. Demonstrate drawing an equation out of a bag, writing the equation on the Equation Activity Sheet, and illustrating the equation by crossing off the subtrahend. Give each student an Equation Activity Sheet. Have each student draw an equation with a minuend of five out of a class bag. Monitor and assist as needed while students complete the activity on the Equation Activity Sheet The students will then go to the computer to illustrate their equation using KidPix.
Closure: Students share and post illustrations and equations.
Assessment Procedures:
Students' performance during the lesson, on the Equation Activity Sheet, and on KidPix will be assessed using a rubric.
Accommodations/Modifications:
Preferential seating, peer tutors, repeated directions, extended time, use of visuals/manipulatives, and teacher assistance will be used to accommodate students for this lesson..
Websites for additional practice, along with flashcards and drill sheets, are available for students.
Refer to IEPs for additional modifications.
