Overview:
Third and fourth grade students will study the waterfowl of a wetland. The students will use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the duck, goose and swan. The students will research the waterfowl using the Internet. Using Timeliner the students will create a timeline and a slideshow of the life of a duck, goose, or swan over the course of a year.

Approximate Duration: 3 - 60 minute sessions

Background Information:
The students will have some knowledge of the wetlands and the waterfowl that make their natural habitat.
Students will have varying abilities with the use of a computer. The students will have limited knowledge with the use of the software, Timeliner and Inspiration.

Lesson Procedures:
Day 1

1. Students will use a Venn diagram to take key word notes while viewing the video from United Streaming, "Animal Profiles: Wetland Waterfowl".
2. The students will conduct research in groups to locate information about ducks, geese, and swans. The students will continue to use a Venn diagram for note-taking as well as a research log. Locate pictures of each waterfowl. Locate information about which of the three one can expect to see in the 71203 area and when.
Go to http://www.greenwing.org/greenwings/duckstuff/duckstufframe2.html to see which flyway we live in and to see a list of the common and uncommon ducks that can be seen in this area. Still researching, go to http://www.greenwing.org/greenwings/duckstuff/duckstufframe3.html to categorize the ducks into the dabblers and the divers.

Organize the notes on the Venn diagrams.  One person from the group will go to the computer and open Microsoft Word.  Complete the Venn diagram on the computer and print a copy for the teacher.
Day 2
1. Visit Black Bayou Lake refuge to observe waterfowl. Take pictures of the area and waterfowl. While there, play Duck, Duck, Goose.
Day 3
1. Using the Venn diagram with notes, students go to Inspiration. Create an outline view with the notes and information about the ducks, geese, or swan.
2. The students will work in groups of three to produce a timeline which depicts the life of a duck, goose, or swan in the course of a year.
3. Make a slideshow out of the timeline. Add graphics of the waterfowl.
