Title:  Figurative Language at Black Bayou Lake

Overview:  While visiting the Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge, students will take digital pictures and make notes with information about the scenic life. Back in the classroom, students will use the digital pictures to complete a figurative language writing assignment.

Approximate Duration:  Approximately one week

Background Information:

Students should be able to use a digital camera.
Students should have a knowledge of figurative language.

Lesson Procedures:
1. Review figurative language with the PowerPoint Presentation titled "Imagery & Figurative Language", located in the Reproducible Materials.
2. Students will use TrackStar #271014 to learn about Black Bayou Lake and practice figurative language. Have students take notes using the Black Bayou Lake TrackStar Worksheet.
3. Students will visit Black Bayou Lake as a group. While visiting the refuge, students will use digital cameras to take pictures and make notes with information about the scenic life and views at Black Bayou Lake.
4. During the next class, students will use the pictures taken at Black Bayou Lake to create a descriptive paragraph using figurative language devices. A rubric for descriptive language will be used.
5. The student will read their work to the class, and the other students will respond in their journal.
6. After students respond, the presenter will show a slide of the picture.
7. The audience will respond to the picture, notifying the presenter whether or not the paragraph created the intended image.
8. The lesson will culminate with students completing the Inspiration template listing examples of figurative language discussed during the presentations.
