Welcome to Monroe City Schools
Instructional Technology Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Project.
Rationale
The Black Bayou Lake NWR Project
results from a desire to provide high-quality, authentic, project-based
lesson plans and activities correlated to both the Louisiana
Content Standards and the Louisiana K-12 Educational Technology
Standards to the teachers and students of Monroe City Schools.
Accountability demands a shift from a teacher directed, passive
learning environment to a student centered, interactive one that
relates to real life experiences.
The new comprehensive curriculum
developed by the LDOE is rich with activities that challenge
and engage students and this project mirrors that model, using
the state's Making Connection Lesson Plan Builder as its guide
to develop high-quality activities. Additionally, in preparation
for the state's forthcoming technology performance-based assessment
for teachers and students, the technology activities in the project
mirror the ones used by the state in the assessment pilot.
District teachers have participated
in various learning activities at Black Bayou Lake NWR through
such programs as Louisiana INTECH
and Rhythms of the Refuge
for some time. Independently of Monroe City Schools, Black Bayou
Lake NWR offers on-site learning experiences for teachers and
students. What better partnership could be formed to meet the
goal of providing authentic learning experiences for teachers
and students? Working together, personnel from Monroe City Schools
and the Black Bayou Lake NWR created a comprehensive learning
project that will benefit the teachers and students not only
of Monroe City Schools but also of Region 8.
Scope
The Black Bayou Lake NWR Project
is a collaborative endeavor between Monroe City Schools Instructional
Technology and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service/Black
Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Rosemary Dillingham, Instructional
Technology Project Facilitator, Joyce Tate, Monroe City Science
Specialist, and Emily Rash, Monroe City Math Specialist teamed
with Gay Brantley, Environmental Educator for the US Fish and
Wildlife Service, to design a multi-curricular and multi-grade
level project that focuses on Black Bayou Lake NWR and its wealth
of natural resources.
The project debuted April 2005
with approximately 50 lesson plans and activities along with
numerous identified resources. Sincere thanks to all educators
who contributed to the project. A special thanks to Lynne Anders,
science teacher at Carroll Junior High School, for writing Probeware
lessons and activities. As teachers conduct the activities and
student products are created, we will add examples to the site. |
We invite area educators to
contribute to the project. We invite area educators to visit Black
Bayou Lake NWR and take advantage of its educational services.
The project is ongoing and
will be maintained and expanded as new resources are developed
and/or identified.
