Nouns in Nature

Overview:
The students will learn about nouns by taking a nature walk around the playground. Using the digital camera, the students will take pictures of the various nouns that they identify around the school.  The students will also take a "virtual walk" around Black Bayou Lake refuge to identify nouns in nature discovered there.

Approximate Duration: 2 - 60 minute class periods

Background Information:
Prior to this lesson, the students should be able to classify nouns as a person, place, or a thing. Students should also have prior knowledge of using a digital camera.

Lesson Procedures:
Day 1
1. The teacher will introduce the lesson with a United Streaming video, "Introduction to Parts of Speech: Herman's Chow Down Nouns."
2. TTW use the Blackline master, Name the Nouns, which is available on the LPB CyberChannel site, http://www.lpb.org/education/cyberchannel.cfm.
3. The students will venture to the playground.  They will be placed into groups. The groups will use a digital camera to take pictures of various nouns found in nature. (Examples - other students, trees, teacher, birds, insects, bird nests, etc...)
4. TTW create a slideshow using Microsoft PowerPoint with the pictures taken by the students. The students will view slideshow on day 2 of the lesson.

Day 2
1. The students will view the slideshow which was created with their pictures of nouns found in nature. As the students view the slideshow they will list the nouns found in nature on the Nouns in Nature Chart which is located in the reproducible section of the lesson plan. The students will list the nouns under the appropriate column labeled people, places, and things.
2. Next, the teacher will use the projector and computer to guide the students around a virtual nature walk of the Black Bayou Lake Project http://www.mcschools.net/mcs/black_bayou_files/index.html. The students will continue to add nouns identified to the Nouns in Nature Chart of the nouns identified on the virtual tour of Black Bayou Lake refuge. The students will name people, places, and things identified under the appropriate column on the chart. The students which are still with their assigned groups will discuss the nouns that each listed on the Nouns in Nature Chart.
3. The students will write a paragraph about their favorite noun using Microsoft Word. Next, they will draw and color a picture of their favorite noun. They may use clip art or the Microsoft Word drawing tools if they choose do do so.

Explorations and Extensions:
A pretest and post test is available on the United Streaming website to assess the students knowledge. Students could identify nouns around the house or in the classroom.
The students could create a KidPix picture of a scene in nature and label the various nouns.
Students can visit the Black Bayou Lake refuge.
