Project Overview

Probing Issues on Black Bayou Lake NWR is a middle school project which provides a framework for collaborative, interactive learning for teachers and students. Since Instructional Technology and Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge were already collaborating on a curriculum project, the decision was made to expand it to include a mini project for the district's 7th grade students. Working together, staff from Instructional Technology, Instructional Support Services and GEAR-UP developed a set of multi-curricular, student centered activities in the core subject areas of ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science. The project uses as its parameters the goals of the Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB) Making Middle Grades Work initiative:

  • To increase the percentages of eighth-graders who perform at the proficient levels in academic subjects
  • To provide educational experiences that increase students' knowledge and skills in reading, mathematics, language arts, science and social studies
  • To provide students with opportunities to apply their skills in the fine arts and to explore careers and new technology.

All 7th grade students and teachers in the district's three junior high schools - Carroll Junior High, M. L. King Middle, and Lee Junior High - will participate in the project. It is divided into 3 stages - Before Field Experiences, Field Experience, and Beyond the Pond. All project lesson plans and activities are described in detail on the Activities page.

Before Field Experiences and Beyond the Pond

Activities to be conducted before and after the field experience have been defined in the lesson plans that will be implemented. Also, the resources for these activities have been identified and/or provided for the teachers and are compiled for convenience on the Resources page.
