Title: Rosie the Explorer!

Overview:
In this lesson Kindergarten students will focus on the positional words used in the book, Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins. The students will visit Black Bayou Lake where the lesson will be extended to include directional words such as, left, right, big, small, top, bottom. After returning to the classroom, the students will use KidPix and a Louisiana map to illustrate the directional words.

Approximate Duration: 3- 30 minute sessions

Content Standards:
Geography: Physical and Cultural Systems
Students develop a spatial understanding of Earth's surface and the processes that shape it, the connections between people and places, and the relationship between man and his environment.

identifying and describing the characteristics and uses of geographic representations, such as various types of maps, globes, graphs, diagrams, photographs, and satellite-produced images. (1,3,4)

1. Identify a map and a globe as a representation of Earth (G-1A-E1)

3. Demonstrate an understanding of directionality, position, and size by correctly using and responding to words such as left, right, first, last, big, little (G-1A-E2)

Interdisciplinary Connections:
Mathematics : Geometry
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of geometric concepts and applications involving one-, two-, and three-dimensional geometry, and justify their findings.

Educational Technology Standards:
Use technology tools (e.g., publishing, multimedia tools, and word processing software) for individual and for simple collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities for a variety of audiences.

Objectives:
TLW listen and respond to the story.
TLW use a puppet and a flannel board activity to demonstrate directional terms.
TLW demonstrate directional terms on a Louisiana map.

Background Information:
The students should be familiar with some directional terms; however, they will not be familiar with a map.

Lesson Procedures:
Day One
1. Assess prior knowledge of the students by asking the directional question, "When you go out the classroom door, which direction do you turn to go to the cafeteria?"
2. To motivate the students, the teacher will use a puppet to show directional terms.
3. Next, the teacher will read the book Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins. Activity cards for Rosie's Walk are located at the following URL Rosie's Walk Activity Cards

4. The students will demonstrate directional terms using flannel boards and characters.
Day Two
1. The students will go on a field trip to Black Bayou Lake.
2. The students will take the puppet on the field trip and use directional terms as they visit the Wildlife Pier Nature Trail..
Day Three
1. Using the Black Bayou Lake Website, http://monroe.k12.la.us/mcs/black_bayou_files/index.html, the students will discuss directional terms along with what was observed on the field trip.
2. Using KidPix, the teacher will display a map of Louisiana emphasizing directional terms: top, bottom, left, right, big, small. For your convenience, go to http://www.50states.com/maps/louisiana.htm for a printable blank map of Louisiana.
3. The students will come to the computer and show directional terms by using a "Rosie" stamp.

Assessment Procedures:
The teacher will observe the children.
The students will participate in the activities.
A rubric will be used to assess the student's participation in KidPix and using the flannel boards.

Accommodations/Modifications:
Use peer tutoring.
Students who need one on one can work with the tutor or teacher during center time.

The activity could be used to develop the concept of positional terms and ordinal numbers. This lesson could be used in connection with a farm unit.
