Overview:
After taking a virtual tour of the Black Bayou Lake Project, students will compare and contrast animals which live on the Black Bayou Lake refuge. The students will use Inspiration software for pre-writing activities.
Approximate Duration: One Day

Objectives:
1. TLW pre-write for a compare and contrast paragraph by creating a Venn Diagram using Inspiration software.
2. TLW compare and contrast two animals from the natural habitat of Black Bayou Lake.3. TLW write a paragraph.

1. Students will have a working knowledge of the writing process.
2. Students will be able to manipulate all software included in the lesson.
3. Students will have already created animal cards on the animals listed in procedure one.
Lesson Procedures:
1. Students will take a virtual tour of Black Bayou Lake by viewing the Black Bayou Lake Project http://www.monroe.k12.la.us/mcs/black_bayou_files/index.html.Click on the Resources link, then scroll down to find the Friends of Black Bayou Photo Contest and Photo Gallery. Here students will find images of wildlife taken at Black Bayou. Students should look under the link to Recommended Web Sites for more information and images.
2. Using Inspiration software, the teacher will lead a discussion with the students about the animals that they saw on the virtual tour of Black Bayou Lake refuge. The teacher will lead the students to identify the following animals:
black bears
armadillos
rattlesnakes
cottonmouth
alligator
alligator snapping turtle
owls
humming bird
3. Students will select two of the above animals to compare and contrast using a Venn Diagram created in Inspiration.( The Venn Diagram is located in the Thinking Folder in the templates under File in the Inspiration software.)
4. Students will export their completed diagram as a jpeg to be inserted into a Microsoft Word document. (The teacher will assist the students with exporting their diagram as a jpeg file.)
5. The students will open Microsoft Word and insert the jpeg of the completed Venn diagram. Individually, each student will compose a well rounded paragraph with a minimum of eight sentences under the inserted diagram image.
6. Working with their original partner, the students will peer edit the paragraphs using a rubric.
7. The students will then make revisions to their edited drafts, and publish their final compare and contrast paragraph using Microsoft Word.
Assessment Procedures:
1. TTW formally assess the completed paragraphs using a rubric.
2. TTW monitor the progress of the writing process informally by viewing the completed, peer edited document.
Accommodations/Modifications:
1. TTW adhere to all individual IEP and 504 modifications.
2. Teacher will assign peer tutors if needed.

Explorations and Extensions:
1. Building on their model paragraphs, students can develop their topic further to ultimately create a multi-paragraph informative essay.
