MCSTI Awarded
Grants
The Monroe City Technology Initiative (MCSTI)
was awarded two new grants from the state this fall that address the academic
achievement of students.
LEARN Grant
The LEARN grant, an extension of the 1997-98 LEARN
project, will place a computer, appropriate software, and a printer in third
and fourth grade classrooms at five of the district's elementary schools.
The participating schools are Berg Jones, Cypress
Point, Lexington, Lincoln, and Clark Magnet.
Computers and printers will be arriving soon, and
installation will be accomplished as quickly as possible.
The new computers will also be wired for internet
connectivity, giving teachers and students access to online activities that
will broaden and enrich the curriculum.
Training of the teachers involved in this project,
both in the purchased software and in internet usage, will be ongoing throughout
the second semester.
CBTF Grant
The CBTF grant targets student achievement in the areas of reading and language
arts in the
district's fifth and sixth grade classrooms and at two junior and senior
high schools.
The grant will place two computers and a printer in every fifth and sixth
grade classroom as well as software that reinforces the skills stressed
in Standard Five of the Language Arts Content Standards.
Students will also have access to the Internet and to the Accelerated Reader
program on the computers.
Lee, Jefferson, Neville, and Wossman are also targeted in the grant. To
provide additional access to the new Steck-Vaughn reading program, ten computers
will be placed in each school.
Equipment and software have been ordered and should be in place by the end
of the year. |
