    Superintendent’s Message

Welcome to the Monroe City School System. The District is a diverse and dynamic learning community, serving over 9,000 students in 19 schools. As an urban school system in the state of Louisiana, we utilize a robust set of instructional and learning strategies to meet the individual needs of our students.

Student learning is the highest priority for our teachers, support staff, administrators and community. After achieving literacy, ultimately, we want students to pursue a rigorous course of studies corresponding to the maximum level of their ability and aspiration. All students in the district have access to the most robust tutorial services in the state, including online, school-based and community organized services. Qualifying students can participate in Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement courses, along with Gifted and Talented programs. Each year the Carmel Hill Foundation of New York sends 30 to 35 students in grades 6-12 from our district to universities all over the nation to participate in Summer Institutes for the Gifted. So far, Students have attended Amherst, UC Berkeley, Texas A & M, and Emory. Our 9,000 students read over 265,000 books each year as indicated through library circulation reports.

We have a staff of educators and support personnel who have distinguished themselves in a multitude of ways, including winning honors and public recognition for their achievement and expertise. They bring compassion, commitment and extraordinary skill to their classrooms and work each and every day. The State of Louisiana rates the quality of our teachers as “Exceptional” – the highest possible rating in the state.

In addition, we are a school district that places the work of teachers, students and partners at the center of our organization. Student learning is our business and to that end our commitment is straightforward and unambiguous. We seek to graduate students who have mastered the basic skills and then apply those skills to creatively solve problems, use technology, consider issues from multiple perspectives, work well with others and aspire for continuous learning.

In the Monroe City School System we believe it is essential to have an educational system that prepares students to work in and contribute to the communities in Louisiana and the world.

Finally, the Monroe City School System has enjoyed good support from the voters in our community. We are grateful for this continuing support as we help each student learn and grow.

    Sincerely,

    James A. Dupree, Ed. D.
    Superintendent
