Activity 2:  Read, Write, Compare, and Order (GLEs:  1, 2, 14)

CC:  Provide student groups with a list of several cities in Louisiana. Have students research (using the computer, encyclopedias, current atlas, etc.) to find the most current population of each city and have them compare the populations and put them in order from smallest to largest. Have students indicate the reason for the ordering by underlining the appropriate place-value digit. Next, have students write the word names for each population number and write the numbers in expanded form. Finally, have students share their work with the class.

Use the following website to have students look up information on populations.  This website offers a table of the most current census (2003) for major cities in LA.  It also offers a table that shows the growth of the major cities from censuses taken in 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2003.
