Unit 3:  Developing Multiplication and Division

Activity 2:  Dividing with Tiles (GLE:  3)

 

 

 

CC:  Have students begin with a number of tiles that corresponds to a given number on a page and to sort the tiles into groups of twos. Repeat with more tiles (multiples of two). Students should begin to recognize a pattern of numbers divisible by two. Repeat the activity by sorting the tiles into groups of fives. Another pattern should be discovered. Students progress to sorting tiles into groups of threes, then tens. Students should be able to recognize and explain patterns in multiples of 2, 3, 5, and 10.
