Unit 3: The Movement of People: A Historical Perspective

Activity 4: Exploration/Migration (GLEs: 56, 61)

 

CC:  Begin an examination of early exploration by creating a large cluster web for the topic. Place exploration at the center of the web, and place the four clusters - countries (England, France, Spain, Portugal), people, motivations/causes, and settlements - as satellites around the center. Be certain to include in the explorers Columbus, LaSalle, and De Soto. Divide the class into four groups, having each group gather key information about early explorers in one of the four satellite clusters (see example below). Once the students have gathered the information, have them complete the cluster web by adding the information to the proper cluster, and then discuss each of the four clusters.

 

Use MS Word to create a cluster web for the topic.

CC:  On a chart labeled Explorers list the names of the explorers the students found and sort the names in the list by the country in which he/she lived.

CC:  Provide a PowerPoint presentation of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
