Unit 4: Nonfiction

Activity 3: Biography  (GLEs:  05, 08b, 09b, 10, 11, 12, 16, 42c)

CC:  Students will select a person about whom they would like to learn more and use the library or Internet (e.g., http://www.factmonster.com provides brief biographies) to research, summarize, and paraphrase events in this person's life.

NOTE: Student research is an important part of this unit.  Activities in this unit provide an excellent opportunity to examine the steps in the research process to help make students more information literate.  Information literacy is an important life skill.  Information literacy is a process in which a person gathers, comprehends, analyzes, evaluates, and uses information in various forms.  Many teachers are not aware that Louisiana's Department of Education has created a state information literacy model to be used across the curriculum.  Louisiana's seven step literacy model can be used to solve information problems whether the problem encountered is in the context of daily life, school or the work place.  This information problem-solving process is based on educational research about how people find and process information.

The following documents will help teachers introduce the LA Information Literacy Model for Lifelong Learning to their students:

MS Word -"LA7 Literacy Model"  (includes the original LA document with added icons)

MS Word -"Research Guide"  (a chart with guiding questions for each step in the LA7 information literacy model; could be kept in the student's notebook/binder or even enlarged as a classroom poster)

PowerPoint -"LA7 Model"   (includes notes for teachers about the information literacy model)
