Unit 4: Nonfiction

Activity 4: Selecting a Topic for I-Search

CC:  Writing a brief I-Search paper allows students to make real-life connections to text and acquire research skills as they search for information on a topic of personal interest.

NOTE:

*I-Search is a process that includes four general steps:

     1. Selecting a topic - exploring interests, discussing ideas, browsing resources

     2. Finding information - generating questions, exploring resources

     3. Using information - taking notes, analyzing materials

     4. Developing a final product - developing communications, sharing

These steps can be easily related to the 7 step LA Information Literacy Model that students used in Unit 4  Activity 3.

CC:  Students can use a K-W-L (e.g., What do I know? What do I want to learn? What have I learned?) chart to formulate questions to guide research.

Use MS Word to create a KWL chart to guide students' research.

CC:  Students will use a discussion sheet (e.g., What is My Question? Why Am I Interested? Where Am I Likely to Find Information? What Kind of Information Do I Think I Will Need?) for peer group meetings.

Use MS Word to create a discussion sheet for peer group meetings.
