Unit 3:  Earth's Crust

Activity 10:  Rocks and the Rock Cycle (SI GLEs: 1, 3, 14, 19; ESS GLEs: 16, 18)

CC:  Begin the activity by having students visit various websites and develop a graphic organizer to summarize information gathered and the understandings they developed about the processes of the rock cycle. Special attention should be given to describing conditions or forces that must exist for one type of rock to change into another. Graphic organizers will be displayed for the teacher, summarizing key points.

If Internet access is available, students can take this activity farther by conducting their own study on the three major types of rocks. Have them develop graphic organizers or concept maps to summarize information gathered and the understandings they developed. Students should view at least two sites for each rock type.
