GUIDANCE

GRADE PLACEMENT  Student records are evaluated for grade level placement at the end of each school year.  The following intervals of credits will be used for grade placement:

  • To advance from 8-T to ninth grade, students must complete LEAP 21 Test requirements

  • To advance from 9th grade to 10th grade, students must have 6 credits to include:

    • Two credits of core content classes (mathematics, English language arts, science, and social studies) with two being a required mathematics and English class)

  • To advance from 10th grade to 11th grade, students must have 11-12 credits to include at least passage of:

    • English I

    • Two required mathematics classes

    • One required science class

    • One required social studies class

  • To advance from 11th to 12th grade, students must have 17-18 credits to include:

    • English I and II

    • Passed two, preferably three required math classes

    • Passed two required science classes

    • Passed two required social studies classes

MINIMUM GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  A student must earn 23 units and pass all five components of the Graduation Examination in order to graduate and to participate in the graduation ceremony.  All Seniors who do not meet graduation requirements by Graduation Day will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.

  • ENGLISH (4 units)

    • English I, II, III and English IV or Business English

  • MATHEMATICS (3 units)

    • Must be selected from the following options:

      • Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry, Advanced Math, or Financial Math, (Calculus may be a fifth unit);

      • Applied Algebra I-A, Applied Algebra I-B, and either Geometry, Algebra II, or Financial Math;

      • Applied Algebra I-A, Algebra I, and Geometry or Algebra II;

      • Integrated Algebra/Geometry, Algebra I, and either Geometry, Algebra II, or Financial Math.

  • SCIENCE (3 units)

    • Biology and two of the following: General Science or Physical Science (but not both), Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, or Biology II.

  • SOCIAL STUDIES (3 units)

    • American History; 1/2 unit of Civics and 1/2 unit of Free Enterprise; and one of the following: World History, World Geography, or Western Civilization.

  • HEALTH EDUCATION (1/2 unit)

  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION (1 1/2 UNITS)

    • Physical Education I and II or Adaptive Physical Education for eligible special education students.

  • ELECTIVES (8 units)

  • TOTAL (23 units)

 

GRADUATION EXIT EXAMINATION  The Graduation Exit Examination, a component of LEAP (Louisiana Education Assessment Program), is mandatory for all students from a public high school in Louisiana.  All five sections of this test must be passed in order for seniors to receive a diploma and/or participate in graduation ceremonies.  For those who do not pass a component of the test, remediation and retesting will be offered.  The five components are:

  • English/Language Arts

  • Written Composition

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Social Studies

Students are tested on the first three components listed above during the spring of their sophomore year.  Students are tested on the last two components in the spring of their junior year.

 

GRADING AND RECORDING  The following grading system is used:

C 85-78 2
D 77-70 1
F 69 - below 0

Gifted Honors Scale:
