Countdown to Success:  Tutoring Programs Offered

Are you feeling the pressures of school and the weight of all the homework and assignments that must be completed? Well, the solution to your problem is available at Wossman High School. The faculty and staff of WHS is proud of the many opportunities that are being offered to students who are needing extra help in the classroom.  Several programs are currently being offered to allow students to better prepare for the classroom, graduation, GEE 21, ILeap, and the ACT. Remediation classes are being offered after school Monday through Thursday from 3:00-5:00 for those students who want to improve their GEE 21 and ILeap scores.  Also Saturday school remediation classes are being offered every Saturday morning from 8:00-12:00. The STATS (Students Tackling Academics Tutorial Sessions) program is available through the athletic department for any athlete who needs that extra tutoring.  Contact Coach Landrum for more information.

HAMPCO, Inc is sponsoring an after-school tutorial program Tuesday thru Thursday from 3-5.  Snacks and transportation are provided.  Contact Mrs. Brass for more information.


Quiz Bowl Team Reclaims Title

The Wossman High School quiz bowl team participated in the 5th  Annual Black Heritage Quiz Bowl held Saturday, January 27 at Carroll High School.  The event was sponsored by HAMPCO, Inc. and District 17 Representative Willie Hunter.

The quiz bowl team competed against Carroll and Richwood.  Our team won this event  three times and came away this year with a commanding victory. This year’s moderator, Alfred Cherry, asked questions pertaining to local and national black history. The quiz bowl team consisted of captain Glenn Myers, Jarell Hall, Jeremy Hall, Erika Pleasant, Evan Johnson, and Chaniquel Miller.  Ms. Michelle Manual is the quiz bowl sponsor.


20 Wossman students honored for achievement

The Wossman High School administration and faculty recently honored 20 students for reaching high reading goals in the National Accelerated Reader Program.  The top 20 readers for the first semester are Jahriel Davis, earning 237 points; Nikita Greely, 160 points; Catherine Davis, 115 points; Erika Pleasant, 88 points; Stephanie Moore, 82 points; Evan Johnson, 81 points, Jacquindolyn Nelson, 77 points; Adrienne Williams, 65 points; Marquindalyn Pleasant, 53 points; Jalleshia Miller, 49 points; Chaniquel Miller, 45 points; Augusta Robinson, 44 points; Antoinette Fuller, 43 points; Ladarius Bush, 42; Niketa McClain, 42 points; Danielle Blunt, 40 points; Janee Hylton, 38 points; Phantisia Vanburen, 38 points; Shanell Booker, 37 points; and Zeandria Smith, 35 points.

In order to receive reading points, each student had to score 90 percent or higher on a computerized standardized test for each book read.


Soccer Strikes Wossman

The administration and athletic department of Wossman High School was proud to announce that the 2006-2007 season of WHS SOCCER was successful as the Wildcats made it to the second round of the Division III playoffs. The boys were able to enter this year’s playoffs as a wildcard.  The first round playoff game against Calvary Baptist of Shreveport ended with a 1-0 victory in over time.  However, the Wildcats came up short in the second round against Episcopal of Baton Rouge.

Team members are:  Bobby Bynum, Damion Jones, Damion Wilhite,   Joshua Franklin, Tracey Jones,   Kevin Robinson,  Danquel Williams, Jabari Powell, Jeremy Hall, John Glover, Tonquez Garey, William Jones, Cedrick Jackson, Michael Potter, Benterrius Tarver, Zareth Sellers, Chelsi Mack, Delisa Hawk, Jeffaria Bolden, Jessica Wade, Kennitia Wilson, Kierara Moore, Lacatherine Bush, Rickesha Newton, S’nead Johnson, Stephanie Moore, Stikiya Jowers, Tyesha Bolden, and Valeris Harper. This year’s teams were coached by Otis Robinson and Dale Zimmerman, Jr.

The players and coaches feel successful by being able to offer another opportunity for students to be a part of a positive experience.


Wossman High School's Jag for Area Graduates

Wossman High School's Jobs for Area Graduates local officers recently attended the State Leadership Conference held in Baton Rouge.  One of Wossman's JAG local officers, Courtney Thomas, was elected state secretary.  Courtney will serve as state secretary for the 2006-2007 year.

Officers who attended the State Leadership Conference were:  Valaris Harper, president; Brittanye Cain, vice president of career preparation, Brittney Matthews, vice president of social activities; Antwon Woods, vice president of community service; Michaela Dorsey, reporter; Dontavious VanBuren, photographer; and Thomas, secretary.
